Tilt: An Inclusive Kettle Designed to Aid Pouring and Filling

Redesigning the Kettle for Inclusivity and Ease of Use

Tilt is an inclusive kettle that addresses the challenges faced by individuals with limited mobility or strength. Its unique hinge design aids users in pouring, reducing strain on the arms. Additionally, the cup filling system reduces the weight carried during filling, making it more manageable for users.

One of the key innovations of Tilt is its hidden hinge mechanism. This design choice ensures that the kettle looks sleek and desirable, even when not in use. The hinge is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, seamlessly integrating into the overall design.

By moving the pivot point high up on the product, Tilt reduces the amount of weight required to be lifted by the user. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who struggle with lifting heavy weights. Not only does Tilt aid in pouring, but it also simplifies the filling process. The cup filling system allows users to fill the kettle one cup at a time, reducing the weight carried from the sink to the kettle.

The Tilt kettle has an overall dimension of 200mm x 200mm x 400mm and can hold up to 1.5 liters of water, similar to other competitor kettles. The design is realized using injection molded components, ensuring durability and ease of production.

Andy Walton's inspiration for Tilt came from the need to create a product that supports users in the pouring of water without compromising on aesthetics. The aim was to eliminate the need for additional pouring aids that are often unsightly and incompatible with standard kettles. Tilt not only fulfills its functional purpose but also stands out as a desirable and visually appealing product.

Tilt was developed over a three-month period from December 2016 to February 2017. Throughout the design process, prototypes and mockups were created to test the pouring mechanism concept and general product interactions. The final design incorporates unique features such as a touch-sensitive button and a wrap-around light power indicator.

This innovative design has garnered recognition in the design community. Tilt was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017 in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Tilt's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
